When I speak of acknowledgement, I am referring to
spiritual recognition of seasons, moon phases, Sabbats and Deity. An experience
I had this evening has prompted me to write this – see Wittering On 14/02/14 - Full Moon Drama.
It has long been my belief that magickal practice does not need to be ostentatious to be effective. Tonight for example, I simply went outside and looked at the moon for a moment - I acknowledged the presence of the Goddess and her beauty, I asked her to bless my moon water and offered thanks. I didn't feel a need to do more and She didn't expect more.
There are many things to acknowledge as a witch, your Deity is an obvious one and in subtle ways they will tell you what they expect; the seasons are another simple act of acknowledgement... a walk in nature to take notice of how it changes, bringing those changes to your altar will bring them into your magick too. Sabbats are usually marked a little more colourfully with festivals or other celebrations but I like to light an appropriate colour candle and gaze and the flame... reflecting on the significance of the Sabbat and what it means to me; I give thanks and only do ritual if I am drawn to.
So to the acknowledgement of moon phases. The cycle of the moon represents the life cycle of the Goddess and as She is my matriarch and key to my practice, noticing the phase of the moon and marking it, even in a small way is my way of 'I love, honour and respect you. Thank you for being present'.
There are 100's of traditions and cultures to draw from and celebrate. Acknowledgement is only the first step of belief... it's saying thank you, leaving an offering, opening your heart to something and letting it in. Never forget that if you open your heart to Deity, they will generally reciprocate and you will receive a deeper connection with them.
