The waxing crescent moon is a time for
magick of new beginnings; as it is currently coinciding with the Celtic month
of Birch, I thought it was a good time to write this. As the new moon was only
three days previous, and the moon cycle relates to the life cycle of the
Goddess, I like to think of this moon phase as the pre-teen Goddess (nearly
maidenly, but not quite). This way, I find the energy of my workings during
this time is very youthful and excitable – almost a ‘Christmas Eve’ feeling.
The energy of the waxing crescent is that
of the growing moon, the Goddess as she is blossoming; it’s a low energy at
this point but it is building. Spells and rituals that take time, the ones that
take more than one moon phase to reach fruition, should be started when the
moon is waxing at the crescent stage.
The
power of it, I utilise with a visualisation/meditation:
- Sitting
in front of my altar (or outside if the moon is visible), I will picture
Artemis (Greek maiden Goddess associated with the moon) as a child, around
11 years old; she is before me with a flower in her hand, the petals are
folded together, encompassing the energy that I require.
- I
request from her the energy of the waxing crescent for my working and wait
for her response.
- If her
decision is to grant my request, she will give the flower to me, and fade
out of the image. If she chooses not to grant my request, she just fades
and the flower will fall into nothing (this has happened only once).
- With
the flower in my hand, I focus on it opening in my hand, and as it does,
the crescent moon rises from it. It sits maybe 3” above the flower, which
then fades out of sight.
- There
are a few ways that I will then harness the energy for my working:
- Allow
the crescent to sink onto my hand and then radiate the energy through my
body.
- If I
am using the energy to bless a new item (tool, book, etc.), I will
visualise the small crescent in my hand gliding toward and then into that
item.
- When I
need a large power boost, as the energy is quite minimal, I will imagine
the moon multiplying into many crescents, until the image in my mind, the
atmosphere of the space I am in is suffused with many glowing arcs. Then
I will draw them all into myself, as if I was a vacuum.
- Once
the energy is within me (to disperse through my working), I will thank
Artemis for her gift and slowly release the visualisation as I open my
eyes.
There are many other ways to gain and
utilise this energy but these are mine. I consider them quite simple and it
would easy to make them more elaborate but that is not who I am - I like simple.
‘Drawing Down the Moon’ is not limited to the phase of the Full Moon and so I
consider this a simplified version of that practice.
