As the Wheel of the Year turns into the light,
darkness slowly recedes and I hear the sound of birdsong strengthen each
morning as I stir from sleep to enjoy the day. It seems wrong that as we head
into January, frost is not biting the nose and fingertips. Though melodious
rain patter has been heard against the windowpanes, it doesn't quite have the
magic touch that frost does. Waking up to see the world blanketed with a chilly
air and a sparkling coat creates an excitement in me that I barely find in
other parts of the year. For this reason I have chosen to recreate it today:
I cannot make it snow; I don’t have that kind of
power, but I can decorate my altar with white velvet to give the appearance of
a snowfall over my sacred space; I can make snowflakes out of paper to decorate
my window and bring that winter chill indoors; finally I can decorate my altar
and myself in glittery adornments, just to add some sparkle. This is my plan
for Imbolc decorations over the next few weeks. Photographs will be posted with
progress.
Now, as Imbolc is on its way, which is the first of
the ‘Spring Sabbats’, I will also be keeping eye on my snowdrops (galanthus) in hope that they bloom for
my festivities. I like to assign a special flower to each Sabbat at for me,
snowdrops are the flower of Imbolc so even though I will be visiting a friend
this Imbolc, my altar will be decorated with snowflakes and I will take some
for my friend’s altar too.
