Ansuz Magick - Stave of Knowledge Talisman

Stave of Knowledge Talisman
There is a plethora of information which is received by the subconscious, it picks up on details that we do not even comprehend we are seeing. It creates your inner voice and intuition, it is the place where visualisations are formed and it is the catalyst of meditation. For those of us who believe in a higher power, Gods and Goddesses, deities of all sorts and other unseen realms, the sub conscious is where these beliefs are realised.

In studying the Ansuz rune, I have come to find its power a useful communicative tool to access the information held in the subconscious. The talisman detailed below harnesses that power, along with the Celtic Ogham power of Ash (or Nion, if you prefer) to retrieve the mysteries held in the depths of the subconscious.

My personal definition of a talisman is an item of power which incorporates blended energies to achieve a specific goal. This is why a talisman does not have to be a bag of mixed herbs or a type of pendant; it can be any object which you charge with a particular intention – a good luck charm for instance. This definition led me to the making of this particular talisman.

You will need:
·       A length of Ash (approx 1.5 cm diameter)
·       A carving tool
·       A pyrography tool (optional)

What to do:
1.  There are two things to be prepared before you begin to craft your talisman stave. The incense blend for circle and the anointing oil. Both sets of information are below.

2.    Ground, centre & cast your circle with the above incense – it will help to create the link between what you know consciously and what your sub conscious hasn’t told you yet.
3.       Use the carving tool to scrape away the bark of the Ash and several layers of the wood; create a long ‘patch’ in the piece of wood ready to inscribe it with your symbols.

4.   Inscribe the two symbols into the bark with a pyrography tool or draw them on with a pen:
5.       Use the anointing oil (detailed above) to coat the stave and charge it with its purpose:
When plagued with questions and with doubt
Nuin of Ogham bring knowledge out
Subconscious wisdom needed then
Ansuz tell me… who, where, when
Oils blended for knowledge call
Bring answers for the good of all
Blessed be this sacred stave
To gain knowledge when it’s crave’d

With many thanks to…

I’d like to thank +Joey Morris for her advice on combining the Ansuz Rune with the Nuin/Nion energy of the Ogham. It has been invaluable and I could not have completed this talisman without her. I therefore wrote this mini-blessing for her, performed over a green spell candle (to honour her Celtic path) and sprinkled lavender and chamomile onto the flame as I incanted.
Blessings rain down on this witch
For abundance in a life that’s rich

A second thank you must go out to +Laura Daligan for agreeing to create the anointing oil. I have long wished to collaborate with her and so I was thrilled when she said yes. As a thank you, I am performing a mini=blessing for her too. Incanted over a red spell candle with a sprinkle of powdered dragon’s blood to honour her fiery nature:
Blessed be this witch of flame
May your wild heart never be tame

Using the Stave of Knowledge
Unusually for me, I have chosen for the stave to be used without incantation. It is already charged with its purpose to be the bringer of knowledge and wisdom and so to use it, hold it in your receptive hand and make it the focal point of a meditation. During the meditation visualise the stave drawing the information from your subconscious into your conscious mind. Keep a pen and paper handy to write down what you discover.

Reflecting on... The Ties That Bind

The idea to write about this particular concept has been bubbling at the surface of my consciousness for several days. It came to me in meditation when I was reflecting specifically on what keeps me on my current path of witchcraft. Where does my faith in the God & Goddess come from? I have been lucky enough to not face much prejudice or objection in the matter of my beliefs which is wonderful and I am grateful for it but it does make me wonder whether if my path had ever been challenged, would I still be on it? I am bound to what I believe only by the belief itself; it was my decision to follow a spiritual, natural and magickal path. So, what keeps me believing? What are the ties that bind me to it? These are fundamental questions which if I did not know the answers, having my path challenged could potentially make me waver from it.

My beliefs have taken years of practice to develop and those practices, that experience is what keeps my path solid beneath my feet. I trust in the presence of deity because I have felt that presence in my circle; I experience the Goddess every time I look at the moon and every time I walk barefoot on the earth; I feel the God beside me each time the warmth and light of the sun surrounds me. What ties me to them is my belief that they are present in each day and night that I acknowledge them; what ties me to that belief is feeling their presence. Therein lays the knot which binds me to the belief in the Lord & Lady whom watch over me and the magickal endeavours I perform.

Being bound to my path is not limited to the belief in the God & Goddess; the creation of my spiritual path has been formed by experiencing many energies: trees, rocks and crystals which bind me to the steady and abundant energy of earth; turbulent storms, tranquil streams and powerful ocean waves bring the element of water flowing through my beliefs and bind me to them; the simplicity of a candle flame and the roaring passion of the sun make fire the binding which keeps me in love with my craft. But stronger than all of these things are the breezes which carry the scent of the season and the eternal fountain which is my imagination; these things bind me to the element of air which is the truest and tightest knot of everything that keeps me believing.

A spiritual path, whether Wiccan, Eclectic, Dianic or otherwise is bound to its traveller by the energies and elements which formed it. The last leaf of Autumn floating on a crisp breeze could be the first step on a spiritual discovery of the seasons. Each path is unique to the individual; I walk my path with the God & Goddess by my side, the magick of the elements surrounding me and all the energy of the Universe as back up. This is the path I am bound to by choice, by love and by respect. The journey creates the ties that bind and each step is another knot.

Reflecting on... 'Perfect Love & Perfect Trust'

This is a common term amongst Pagan paths and relates to how you approach your practice. It is the intent with which you create and enter your circle; it is the mind set which dispels fear and it is the belief which sparks the magick of practice. If you experience doubt of the heart or mind when performing/casting, then the manifestation of your work will reflect that doubt.

I personally do no subscribe to the word perfect in the mundane world because I believe the concept of perfection, true perfection is beyond human comprehension. This is why I use ‘Perfect Love & Perfect Trust’ in my practice as a witch. It adds to the spiritual level of the working; by using the concept of perfect love, I am accepting that deity loves me and is working through me. This also applies to perfect trust – a mutual trust between deity and I that the intent of my working is just.

The meaning is not solely about the connection to deity for me. Entering a circle in perfect love is also an expression of devotion to your craft; it is the acceptance and surrender by the mind, body and spirit that you consider your practice and belief to be your spiritual home. Home is, for the majority of the population, where you find love. In my craft, this is never truer than when I enter circle and connect. In that place, between the worlds, between the conscious mind and the realm of the unseen is my home – it is where I experience perfect love. I carry this love with me by wearing my pentacle, which for me is the symbol of perfect love, given to and received from home.

Perfect Trust is also represented by wearing my pentacle. This is manifest in my trust that following the line of the pentacle will always allow me to reach all points of its path. As each point represents an element, I carry the elements with me wherever I travel – in this world or those beyond. To enter a circle in Perfect Trust is essential for successful practice; it is the belief behind the intent; the faith without evidence that your energy will project and manifest your desire and that the presence of deity is with you.

The Universe is a vast place, infinite and full of unknown entities, elements and quantities. If you have had the blessing that is to experience a moment of perfect love and perfect trust in the Universe, it should be cherished and carried with you into every magickal, spiritual and mundane moment.

Ansuz Magick - Sylph Wishes

Sylph Wishes
I knew when I started studying Ansuz that I wanted to do something relating to the element of Air and after some thought I came up with this spell to send your wishes out to the Sylphs (Elementals of Air). I am very aligned with the element of Air and so this came to me very naturally and is possibly one of the simplest spells I have ever written.

You will need:
·        4 lengths of navy blue ribbon (approx 12” long)
·        A Citrine point crystal
·        Anointing oil (see right)
·        A tree (preferably Ash but this is optional)

What to do:
1.          In circle, take hold of a piece of ribbon and make a wish. Imbue the ribbon with the intention of gaining that wish whilst drawing the Ansuz symbol in the air over it (as you would draw an invoking pentagram in the air).
2.       Use the citrine point to ‘write’ your wish on the ribbon whilst reciting:
I charge this ribbon with my wish
Blessed by Ansuz for sylphs to kiss
3.        Repeat steps 1 and 2 with the remaining ribbons.
4.      The anointing oil should be poured into a small bowl – dip the ribbons into it until they are complete covered.
5.        Now, take them to your chosen tree and tie them one at a time to sturdy branch, whilst reciting:
Sylphs nearby on wind and breeze
My wishes need your grace and speed
Blessed by Ansuz for your kiss
Which will magickally grant each wish

Reflecting on... Finding the Fun

No one can say their life has always been perfect; bumps in the road are a necessary and unavoidable part of life. If you live your life trying to deny this then you are wishing it away and before you realise it, your life will have passed you by. I know that not all hardships can be fixed with a smile and a cuppa (or by dancing in the rain) but there is a lot to be said for finding the fun in things. The image quote I have used inspired me to write this, and I chose this specific one because the sky is currently letting loose like the clouds are being juiced and I just went for a twirl around in that magickal undine-sparkling liquid falling from the blackened heavens. I laughed and spun around and got completely soaked but the rush is incredible and incomparable to sitting at the window waiting for the Sun.

I realise that I have taken this quote literally in my watery activity today and there are other, similar, quotes that relay the same message; such as: Life is about the journey, not the destination”. There is a mirrored message also in the song ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’, featured in Disney’s Mary Poppins: “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun”. And to include one more quote which has become world famous and possibly even made it on to T-shirts: “Life is what you make it”! These messages are crying out to us and it’s time to listen… so, if life is what you make it, make it fun!

Enjoyment, love, laughter, fun are what make the experience of life worth it. Take that experience and run with it, expand it, feel it, live it… don’t just dance in the rain, rumba in the rain, even twerk in the rain if you are so inclined. If you can find that spark of fun in every situation then you have magick in your life and when those pesky bumps in the road show you up, you won’t care… they will be smaller, easier to avoid, or best of all jumpable in comparison. And if you are very, very lucky there may be some puddles on that road from the recent rainfall that you can jump in and create a very fun splash.

Wittering on... Post & Plans Updates 20/04/14

As everyone may have noticed, I am posting again. Through February and March, I spiritually burned myself out working on my Thurisaz Magick posts and was in much need of some R+R before being able to dedicate myself to discovering well-researched and adeptly put-together ideas for Ansuz Magicks. Well I am pleased to announce that my energy is now flowing again and I am well underway creating my next Ansuz talisman. Concept is now set in stone – a tool to bridge the gap between the conscious and subconscious mind; a few details and the wording are still being worked out, but here are the items to collect if you would like to make one for yourself when it’s posted:
·        Dried honeysuckle (for incense)
·        Saffron (for incense (for incense)
·        A length of Ash branch (approx’ 2 cm diameter; 8 – 12” long
·        A carving tool
·        A pyrography tool (optional)
Also, to get excited about with this talisman, the one and only +Laura Daligan will be creating the anointing oil. To say I am excited about this is an understatement as she is one of my favourite witchy youtube personalities.

Reflecting on… has also started again and my newest post in the series Reflecting on Reflection has had some very lovely comments which I am grateful for. There is no shortage of things to reflect on journeying a witchcraft-based path and so expect lots more of these posts in the coming months.

I had also promised to start posting colour magick which I am still planning to do but have been unable to start due to work commitments. However, I have a week off coming up soon so that series may be starting by the end of the month.

Finally, in regards to Spell Spin; I am keeping it active but as I now create many of my own workings, these posts will be sporadic and only created if something really appeals to me.

Blessed be, my witchy friends x

Inspirational People #11 - Sunshine Morning Rae

Sunshine Morning Rae

Well, where to start… I discovered this wonderful and lovely woman on the ‘Witches of the Moon’ youTube channel and was instantly addicted to her videos. She’s warm, friendly, easy to relate to and a dog-lover. Her videos are down-to-earth, informative and inspirational. She doesn’t play to the camera, she tells it how it is and she has some astonishingly original and unique ideas.

I have long looked for inspirational people on youTube and have found some real gems in the witchy crown jewels; Sunshine Morning Rae is one of the rare gems who shine brightest. I have never met her and there are many miles and even an ocean or two between her home and mine but I find her, and I use this word for lack of another, an authority on the delicate balance which creates magickal proficiency.

Reflecting on... Reflection

This may seem a little redundant as a topic but self-reflection is an important part of spiritual development. The image quote I have used was merely a jumping off point for this post but its message is the root of why I use reflection as a means of furthering my magickal education. There are no rules to finding enlightenment but if there was one, this would probably be it. Finding out who you are, what you believe in, where your loyalties lie… these lessons are achieved by emotion, not thought.

There are two things which I deem important for this topic; the first is the meaning of reflection and the second is the definition of the soul. For me, the word reflection instantly conjures up the thought of a mirror; that which reflects the physical image back to the onlooker but what about seeing the spiritual being that lives and breathes through the body you see. How does one hold up that mirror to the soul? I often wish I had a definitive answer to this question but as with many of life’s big questions, there is no right answer. Your soul is your conscience and inner voice; it is your intuition and morality; it is the truth of who you are. I could quite easily fall into talking about the psychological concept of the ID (inner desire) and ego here; the soul manifests the ID; the thought processes that filter these emotions to make them acceptable to how you choose to live are the ego. The hearts only job (on a non-physical level) is to feel and these feelings are the door to your soul; the mind is the lock(s) on that door… this is why you will hear many guided meditations begin by saying ‘empty your mind’; with no lock on the door, where can’t you go?

I personally find meditation a wonderful journey into the realms of the soul and often visualise myself shedding the mundane world as I enter this state. When in meditation, the consciousness drifts into a realm of possibility and potential; my soul can experience a level of freedom which is not available in everyday life. That metaphorical door is not only unlocked but it disappears completely; freedom to go anywhere, be anything and to love unconditionally. As I cannot imagine not wanting this experience, I use reflection to attempt to keep the locks off that door, to diminish the thought processes which filter the purity and truth of the soul; I confront them magickally, mentally, spiritually and physically so that I am kept honest, compassionate and loving.

Reflection could be considered a umbrella term for the various paths to glimpsing your own soul but will forever be a path of learning who you are.

Rune Magick - Ansuz

This post is going to grow quite a bit, much like Thurisaz. The first talisman - Witch-Link - requires a month long binding and so I am posting the binding now whilst I finalise the details of the talisman bags. Please check back for regular updates and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate...
Blessed Be x

Magick requires many things: communication, inspiration, imagination, eloquence, certain flair; these things can all be enhanced by the Ansuz rune. I consider it a conduit of magickal energy and as such use it much in my practice for the messages I receive from spirit to be all the more powerful and less difficult to interpret. The magicks I shall list here will be only a sample of what Ansuz can do but I share them direct from my subconscious and newly added to my Book of Shadows; as such they are imbued with my personal energies too. As seems to have become standard, I will begin with talismans:

Ansuz Talisman
With Ansuz being the rune of communication and wisdom, the talismans I have come up with mirror those traits. The Witch-Link talisman is a delicate way of energies communicating between witches. I am particularly proud of this talisman as it has taken me weeks to get correct. The second talisman listed is used to gain wisdom from the subconscious; I have devised this talisman to provide a very spiritual encounter. I have concentrated on communication as the focus of this Talisman ‘section’ of Ansuz magick because it is arguably the most prominent trait and power of the rune. It has taken much soul searching to deliver and create these talismans because communication is an exchange and I consider it necessary to give something of yourself to receive wisdom. What I have given is time; many hours of research into the rune and its associations, frantically reading tome after tome and a hundred websites to finally reach this moment

Witch-Link
This talisman is inspired and in fact originally thought up Shiann Raven Moon, who for those who have not seen my blog before, or hers, is my best friend and sister witch. We live in separate parts of the country and although we speak on a daily basis, we only get together about twice a year. This talisman is being created so we call each others energies into our private circles when coveted or required.
You will need:

·       2x small Dark Blue charm bags (organza or velvet)
·       2x Small Conch Shells
·       A 2 of Wands Tarot Card
·       Myrrh Essential Oil
·       A photograph of yourself
·       A photograph of the other witch
·       Scissors/athame

What to do:
Step 1 – Shell Binding

The shells need to be bound together for a full month, both physically and magickally. This is accomplished in circle and I would add extra protection to the circle with The Thurisaz Guard from Thurisaz Meditations post.

a)       Mark the shells with an Ansuz symbol on each one.
b)      On the full moon, anoint the shells with myrrh oil.
c)       Perform a ‘Light Binding’ by reciting this chant three times under the moon whilst physically binding the shells with white cotton:
Dear Goddess, bless this binding rite
With your power, this moonlit night
I bind these shells for future use
Let your light, the bind infuse
d)      Keep the bound shells on your altar until the Dark Moon two weeks later. Under the dark moon, anoint the shells once more.
e)       Perform a ‘Dark Binding’ by reciting the following chant three times, under the dark moon and physically binding black cotton over the white cotton:
Dear Goddess, bless this binding rite
With your power, this moonless night
I bind these shells for future use
Absent light, the bind infuse
f)        Return the shells to your altar until the next full moon.
g)       Use the second full moon to finish the binding: Use a morning glory vine as a third and final binding wrap, whilst reciting:
Bound the same in light and dark
By Goddess blessing and Ansuz mark
Connected now in the astral plane
With physical sever, the bind won’t wane
h)       Focus on the shells form, bound completely by the energies of the Goddess at the most bright and most dark phases. Visualise the earths power binding them through the morning glory. Once you feel that these shells could be magickally bound no more, move on.
i)         Cut the bindings to physically release the shells from each other
On this night, the binding’s done
I cut the ties but harm no one
Your separation forms a route
For these two witches to commute
So mote it be
I personally feel that the full talismans from this point should be made and charged at the new moon, therefore, keep the shells on your altar, wrapped in a blue cloth with the 2 of wands tarot card until that time. The energy of this tarot card, the symbolism of two wands, is an ideal metaphor to charge the shells with magickally linking two witches.

Step 2 – The Herbal Blend
This herbal blend is for the talisman bags; it will not be crushed down so there is no need for a pestle and mortar, just a small bowl to hold the blend until you are going to use it. As you add the ingredients, recite as follows:
Magickal Ash your leaves I add
This blend is now protection clad
Star Anise, give psychic sight
From circle to circle, bring your might
And Apple wood upon my soul
Make the witch connection whole
Stir, the blend 3 times Deosil, 3 times Widdershins, and 3 times Deosil again. Incant:
Stirred together, three times three
To combine my sister witch with me

Step 3 – Talisman Bag

1.          During the new moon create your circle, I personally choose a protection circle, using lavender incense for an extra boost. Ground & Centre yourself while the lavender incense burns out.
2.        Cleanse the talisman bags with sage, incense or smudge. I like incense for convenience and minimal levels of SRS (smoky room syndrome). Open the bags up ready to add their contents.
3.        The first thing to add is the Herbal Blend; divide it equally between the two bags. As this is a new ‘make’ to me, I also added an incantation to this step:
Protection formed by leaves of Ash
Star Anise for a psychic splash
With apple wood the link’s complete
Botanic blend now aid this feat
4.       Time for the conch shells. Have one in each hand and hold them together so the ‘open’ sides are touching; visualise their bound state in the astral plane. Pull them apart slowly and see a passage forming between them – this can be as simple as a corridor or you can go more extravagant. Again, I have added an incantation; once your hands are shoulder-width apart, recite the words below before placing one shell in each bag.
This passage formed from shell to shell
Is active only for rite or spell
Be dormant when you’re not in use
For protection from abuse.
5.        The last item to add to each bag is the photographs. Your photograph into the bag you are giving to the sister/brother witch; and their photograph into the bag you are keeping. More rhyming (I do love my rhyming). Hold one bag in each hand and recite:
In perfect love we now combine
With perfect trust our powers align
Admittance only for us two
This route of magick to travel through
6.        Last step is to tie the bags and send the one with your picture to the other witch.

Using the Link
Shiann Raven Moon is a very good friend of mine as well as a sister witch and she helped to create this idea. I will therefore use us as an example of how to activate the link. If I needed her energy to help with a spell or rite, I would use the talismans in the following way:
a)       We would start by arranging a time when we would both be available to be in circle. At this time, we would both wear the talisman around the neck (although on a belt is another way to go). Also, as timing is important to be synched up with each other, it is also handy to have an alarm of some sort, such as an egg timer.
b)      We would cast our respective circles, ground and centre. I will note here that I consider it important to be wearing the talisman before the opening ‘ceremonies’ of casting so that the corridor/passage is opened within circle.
c)       Once centred, we would each open our respective ‘end’ of the passage by activating our talisman. This is done via meditation and incantation. A pre-approved time would be set, for example 8pm. At this time, we would both set the alarm/timer for 60 minutes and go into meditation.
d)      Once in a meditative state, we would both hold our respective talisman and visualise the corridor between the two shells – this would take approximately 5-10 minutes but all times can be extended or reduced depending on your own practices.
e)       I chose an incantation to activate the corridor as Shiann and I are both very fond of the rhyming.
Shell to shell a path is open
A route which will remain unbroken
In perfect love the link is made
Witch to witch for help and aid
In perfect trust, essence flow
Witch to witch, let it glow
f)        Once the link is open on both sides, the next step would depend on if we both wanted to do workings or just one of us. If only I was doing a working, Shiann would visualise her energies being sent to me, whilst I would visualise receiving them. If we were both practicing, then there would be energies sent and received, I like the idea of turning the corridor into a dual carriageway for this.
g)       At this point, the talisman maintains the link and we would do our different things.
h)       Once ready to disable the link, we would return to a meditative state. Timings for this will have been arranged beforehand.
i)         Disable the link in rhyme, as it was enabled. Visualise the energy in the corridor dissipating and returning to its owner; the corridor getting darker and collapsing in on itself. Recite:
Shell to shell the path is broken
Route now dormant, until reopen
In perfect love, help was gained
Witch to witch, unrestrained
In perfect trust, with magicks sent
I thank you dearly for energies lent

j)         Once the corridor is completely dissolved, bring yourself out of meditation.
